Uncovering America's Generous Side The culture you grow up in usually has a significant effect on the values you hold. If you have moved to another country you become keenly aware of this fact as you are able to contrast the values of your own society against that of your host's. When people are brought up in a tolerant, cooperative society that values things like community, education and art, more often than not, they embody a least a good proportion of those values in their everyday lives. If they were brought up in a violent, intolerant society that valued war, misogyny and greed, there's a good bet they'd instinctively behave in a way that reflected those values. This is of course an extreme comparison -- culture is complicated and the more I have traveled, the more I understand that when it comes to assessing whether a culture is 'good,' 'bad' or 'better,' it's usually a matter of taste and opinion. There are certain aspects of America that I find enormously attractive as a Brit -- the openness and friendliness of the people, their generosity, incredible optimism and dynamic entrepreneurialism, and the lack of a stifling European-style class system. It's a great country to live in and in general, I'm very happy here. However, there is a side to America that I find extremely unsettling -- the relentless fixation on money, the deeply corrupt political system, lack of public health care and the massive extremes in wealth inequality, to name a few. There seems to me to be a very dangerous combination of cultural, political and economic factors that make greed and corruption a staple of American life. And sadly, I think that America is a country so beholden to the interests of the wealthy that I don't hold a huge amount of hope that anything significant can, or will happen to change the status quo. The roots of the problem are, I believe, cultural. America was founded on the ethos of rugged individualism -- the notion that you could move to the new world, work hard and become whoever you wanted to be. This in itself is no bad thing, but combined with a political system open to the influence of money, it has become positively toxic. The current monetary system, often referred to as 'selfish capitalism' is a ruthless economic paradigm designed to concentrate wealth in the hands of the few and keep the rest of the population in a constant state of insecurity so that they often have to work two to three jobs just to stay alive. This system has been sold to the public as the ultimate expression of rugged individualism -- the very definition of the American way, and the only option other than communism. Of course it isn't, but when the corporate media system owned by the same financial interests that control the political system reinforces that notion day in day out, it's hard for the public to imagine an alternative. There is an implied notion behind the theory of free market capitalism that human beings are inherently selfish. This has roots in Darwinian biology, and is therefore seen as a logical extension of human nature. Selfish capitalism is natural, and therefore right. This every man for himself attitude seeps into everything we do -- from who we vote for and how we treat our fellow citizens. In many countries around the world, homelessness and severe mental illness is seen as a reflection of their society and therefore unacceptable. In America, there is a disassociation and disregard for the unfortunate - just walk around any major city and you'll see hundreds, if not thousands of mentally ill and homeless people begging for money on the streets. In the selfish capitalist paradigm, they are as responsible for their own misfortune as the self made millionaire is responsible for his success. Because America is a country of individuals, the poor and mentally ill are separate from us and can be ignored. However, for every action there is a reaction, and despite America's brutal treatment of its poor, there is an undercurrent of extreme generosity that I have personally not seen in any other country. Americans give an astonishing amount of their own money to charities, more so as a percentage of GDP than in any other country in the world. On a personal level, there is a culture of kindness and understanding that is not manifested on a societal level -- a strange contradiction that could have some interesting outcomes. Movements like Occupy Wall Street, the explosion of non-profits, and the deep mistrust of the political classes reflect the growing disenchantment with the selfish capitalism model -- a sign that culture in America could be changing. And if the roots of America's problems are cultural, a significant shift in culture could go a long way in changing the political system. It is in the interests of the wealthy to perpetuate the selfish capitalist model. It works for them, so maintaining the status quo is a primary objective. They will continue to buy politicians, rig legislation to give themselves tax breaks and access to public money. They will continue to ensure the media doesn't report on anything of value by focusing on ratings and profit over reporting, and they will smear anyone who suggests otherwise. But the funny thing is, the harder they try, the harder the reaction will be. And we're seeing it now -- a sign that America's generosity could be more powerful than its greed. HERE IS A QUESTION I WAS ASKED YESTURDAY BY A GROUP OF PEOPLE AND MY ANSWERS TO IT Is America greedy, selfish and uncaring? The tea parties tell it all. They are people that don’t want to pay any taxes to help others. This group claims Americans are over taxed and yet all objective evidence shows Americans are the least taxed people out of 30 western democracies. In fact the average American paid just a 14% income tax rate. The richest American pay an average federal tax rate of just 17%, this while the tax table show it should be 36%. So what is all the noise about from this small group of right-wing nut jobs? They hate the idea that they have to pay for anything America does except for war. They are not calling for any reduction in military spending that is now equal to one-half of all military spending of the entire world. You got! America spends as much as the rest of the world combined, all 195 countries, on war. This group is for the following: 1.Elimination of income taxes on both individuals and corporations 2.A New NATIONAL sales tax of 23% on all items including food (This is the most regressive tax as it impacts the poor more than the rich) Most objective studies show this will have to be MUCH HIGHER – 30% or more to replace the income taxes 3.No federal government programs to help the poor, sick, children and the old 4.Unlimited taxpayer spending on the military 5.Taxpayer support for the occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan 6.Taxpayer support for aggressive military actions in Pakistan, Iran, Yemen, and Somalia 7.Continued support for Communist China and moving more American jobs there 8.The elimination of Federal environmental, worker protection and product safety laws – these restrain Free market capitalism 9.Reduced government regulation of business including regulations on banks and Wall Street – these restrain Free market capitalism 10.Privatization of all government programs including Social Security and Medicare – these programs need to be controlled by for profit Wall Street firms 11.Your Social Security will now be run by Goldman Sacks and the Wall Street crooks – the REPUBLICANS tried to do this in 2001 12.No federal government help for poor public schools about $32 billion – it you are a child and are born poor – too bad is what they say 13.Elimination of Head Start programs and federal lunch programs for poor kids 14.Elimination of federal departments of Education, FDA, FAA, SEC and other government regulators that restrain FREE market capitalism There is much more and you need to dig a little to find it before you sign up to destroy all citizen protections the federal government provides. Keep in mind that the crooks that just created the worst recession since the great depression are in the “private sector”, the banks and Wall Street. This happened not because America had too much regulation – it happened because the regulators did NOT enforce the laws. Now the right-wing nut-jobs says we should have even less regulation than before so the banks and Wall Street can go back to business as usual. The Federal Reserve (Fed) didn’t do their job. If they had enforced the law the mortgage mess would not have happened. As I watch the world

As I watch the world it seems that every day we, as a people, are less and less concerned with others. Not to say that everyone is greedy and selfish, but in general, people only look out for themselves and those right next to them. Have you ever seen someone that needed help, but you just said that you were too busy so you couldn't help them? Maybe and old woman at the market was having trouble loading all of her groceries in the car and you didn't take a few minutes to help her with her bags. Maybe you saw a man who got caught in the rain and you didn't stop to give him your spare umbrella. Maybe a dog with a collar wondered into your yard and you didn't check the tag to see if there was a number you could call. Did you think about helping, but then decide that you too busy or that it wasn't your business to get involved? I'm having trouble understanding why people are always so reluctant to help others even in the tiniest of ways. I'm not saying you should let a homeless guy move into your house, but it probably wouldn't hurt to give him a sandwich, would it? I understand that some people really are busy and tired sometimes, and that they really don't have the time or the energy to help, but in most cases, you just don't care enough about other people. The Demise of Mainline Religious Denominations in America The Wages of Unfaithfulness I have written earlier of what I believe is a direct correlation between the decline of America and the “great falling away” of her people from the religious faith, which historically was a part of the foundation of the country. Deny it, if you like, but it does not change the facts, the TRUTH. Since the Second World War, when returning GIs brought something called “moral relativism” from Europe to America, there has been a struggle between the secular side of America and the religious side of America. The secular side—the side that rejects religion and religious considerations has been consistently gaining ground. Sad to say, ofttimes their advances were made with the assistance of many in the clergy. Today we recognize moral relativism as “political correctness.” Since creation, there has been no greater evil spawned by Satan and delivered upon earth from the deepest bowels of Hell itself. The very definition of deception, political correctness has saturated American society. It is easy enough to understand how our government would instantly adopt any form of deception that might aid their lying and scheming. But, when the cornerstone denominations of the Christian faith in America embraced political correctness, its hellish properties became apparent ... at least to some of those religious denominations that insist upon hewing close to the grain of the Holy Scriptures from which they draw their bearings. The evangelicals railed against political correctness while the mainline denominations drank it in much as a thirsty man at a cool spring in a desert oasis. Decades ago it became clear to many observers that America was headed for trouble. And today—America is IN trouble. BIG TROUBLE! The crisis of which I speak is a crisis of the soul of every individual American. And the blame for this endangerment of the souls of Americans can be laid at the feet of the hierarchy of the mainline religious denominations in America. This nation, whether you choose to believe it—or not—was founded as much on biblical scripture as it was on common law. America used to be a “God-fearing” nation filled with people who KNEW they relied upon the kindness and the grace of an omnipotent God to guide them through any troubles they/we as individuals, and as a nation, faced. That is no longer the case. The result of switching America’s fealty from God to man is plain for all to see. We are today – a pitiful nation in decline. America resembles nothing less today than a once powerful, muscular, man whose body is riddled by cancer and has shrunken to a shell of its former being. When America was young and vital the ministers of the mainline denominations took to their pulpits to preach from the Scriptures. They told their parishioners of the story of God’s benevolence, his faithfulness, and they told us of his jealousy. They reminded Americans that God Himself said: “I am a jealous God!” Those of us perched in the pews knew there was a price to be paid for willfully disconnecting oneself from the power source that is God. Equally as important, I think, we Americans knew, in those days, that America was no accident. We KNEW that America was to us as the Promised Land had been, and remains, to the Jewish people. The extreme importance the ministers, priests, and rabbis of the churches and synagogues cannot be overestimated. It was they who shepherded the huge flock known as America in the way they should go. And America was so much better for it. The bitter truth is, in my opinion, the church has turned its collective back on the One it purportedly serves and now it serves, instead, its own interests, its own politics, its own politically correct philosophy of what God OUGHT to be, and, in so doing, they have created God in their own image. And what a pitiful god they have created! Moral relativism (political correctness) has no place in the pulpit. When God, Himself, refers to some action, or inaction, of man as a sin, then it is not left to the ministers to equivocate. They are bound to pass God’s pronouncement on to the sheep of their flock. For a pastor to do less cannot be defined as being honest with either man or God. There was a time, not so long ago, when ministers were the pillars of their community, both the religious community and the secular community. They were solid citizens. They could be looked up to, relied upon, and trusted. In many cases they were role models for youngsters who would later join their ranks as pastors, priests, and rabbis. That was then. This is now. Those members left in the congregations of today’s mainline churches are growing older as the rolls continue to shrink. Attendance at services is very low. In some of the denominations there seems to be an on-going struggle of wills between the membership and the hierarchy of the churches. Such an atmosphere is not conducive to worship. Sniping? Maybe. Worship? No. So what has happened? It has been my personal observation that the hierarchy of the mainline churches went left and adopted so much of the philosophy of the political left that many of their members left. I don’t mean the membership went left, also. I mean they LEFT as in: They went away. In fact, many of them went right. That is just another way of saying they began to associate themselves with churches that still believe, preach, and practice the scriptures. That explains why the evangelical churches in America are growing by leaps and bounds. Look, churches cannot claim to be representatives of God on this earth, a Christian church, and then teach a congregation a lifestyle that is not Christian and certainly not in keeping with what the scriptures tell us God/Christ taught us—and demands of us. It is as simple and as uncomplicated as that. Somehow, the mainline denominations have made a turn away from God, away from those age-old lessons He has taught us through the authority of the scriptures, and now they find themselves blindly stumbling down the road to complete oblivion. And the really sad thing—they don’t understand why. I know this is not the popular explanation for what has befallen those shrinking denominations – I DO But when you clear all the smoke away, get past all the excuses, and really, REALLY, look at how the churches got into this fix, there is only one answer. Look, I am a refugee from one of those churches. I saw this coming. I fought it for about five years, or so. I argued my way up the hierarchical ladder to the top – only to have my national bishop tell me I didn’t know what the dickens I was talking about (in a kindly and gentle fashion, of course). It was then that I decided to cut my losses and hit the door. I did so amidst numerous accusations that I would not stay and fight from within the church. My answer was that I was following the teachings of the scriptures in getting myself “OUT from among them.” I hold that the collapse of the mainline denominations not only will have, but already HAS had, an extremely negative effect on America. All one has to do is consider our society today, our government, our education system, practically every facet of American life which was so carefully influenced by the church in the early days of America. Observe how it has all become so crass, so unkind, and so angry. It is obvious that something is missing. The churches in America once provided that missing thing. There was a time when the church not only set the standards for American society, often times it WAS the standard for our society. They spoke with the authority of the scriptures. When the mainline denominations turned their backs on the scriptures they began losing their authority… and their followers who, naturally, sought green pastures and still waters in the flocks of the evangelicals who still believe that being biblically correct rather than politically correct is the path to righteousness and the guarantee of eternal rest. Why is this so difficult for our mainline denominations to understand?

 For some time, there have been unsubstantiated reports of the Obama administration engaging in clandestine negotiations with China toward satisfying America’s debt to that nation via exchanges of land and resources. Such an arrangement would be illegal and treasonous of course, but given its deportment to date, that would not likely deter this administration. Also, in the face of having trillions of dollars in debt called by China, and the economic catastrophe that would ensue, it is entirely possible that Obama might request and be granted some manner of dispensation from Congress to legitimize this pact. This week, I presented substantiation to the aforementioned reports, much to the fear and consternation of most people who became apprised of this phenomenon. Referencing sources that have proven reliable in the past, I cited such things as Chinese military operatives engaging in clandestine “research” within U.S. borders, and assessments of land and resources having been conducted by China in recent years, all with the administration’s approval. All of this falls well within the parameters of Barack Obama’s long-standing desire to bring America down, as it were, punishing the American people for centuries of enjoying the spoils of imperialism, colonialism, and oppression, as well as finally bringing this nation under the heel of communism. It also explains maneuvers that have taken place over the past few years relative to this administration. Given the economic circumstances in which America found itself when Obama took office, many were horrified at his spending $5 trillion during his first term, and decisions that resulted in America’s debt increasing by approximately $10 trillion. Given his objectives, however, what better way to bring about increasing debt pressure than by more spending? We’re aware that liberal politicians have treated communist China with a marked naïveté going back to the Clinton administration, allowing them inordinate incursion into our ports and commercial infrastructure, and that Obama has been singing China’s praises with regard to their infrastructure and growth since 2008. In 2011, Republican lawmakers voiced concern that the Obama administration was allowing high-ranking Chinese military officials access to sensitive U.S. military installations. Thus – which came as an outrage, but no surprise to many – it is the Chinese government that is lobbying Obama to disarm the American public. They foresee a time when there will be widespread anger against them for their role in this obscene arrangement, and would rather not have to militarily engage armed Americans over land or resources that they will control, some of which is in America’s heartland. Some perceive Obama’s spirited pursuit of gun control after the Sandy Hook massacre as typical knee-jerk liberal opportunism, but it is far more than that. As reported previously in this space, despite Obama’s affinity for communism and show of solidarity with the world’s leftists, the Chinese government thinks him a fool, yet they are more than happy to expand their global influence at our expense. There has been a certain amount of backlash from conservatives given Obama’s pretentious and autocratic pursuit of new firearms regulation, and even from some Republican lawmakers. This week, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) claimed that Obama has “drunk the Kool-Aid… he’s high on his own power,” and that he will “pay the political price” for gun control, predicting 2010-style GOP Senate victories in 2014. Obama’s definitely high on power, but I wouldn’t count on him paying any price for his policy escapades; considering the course America is on at the moment, there may not be a midterm election in 2014 at all. If there is, the leftist juggernaut of a compromised press, political organization, and outright fraud proved in November 2012 that it can prevail over all logic, common sense, and ostensible fail safes within the American electoral system. As the press continues to maintain the illusion that Obama is simply another American trying to do the right thing, he has been involved in the darkest machinations, some as yet incomprehensible to the average American.
