The Greatest Lesson I Chose Not To Learn

The Greatest Lesson I Chose Not To Learn

In this world, those who seek the truth will also find trouble. -- G Amirault

There are many times when speaking the truth is in your highest good and the highest good of others (utilitarianism). Yet many of us have much difficulty speaking our truth to others, especially that to important others such as parents, siblings, close friends, co workers and mates. We are afraid the other person will be angry by our truth, even when we state it without judgement or blame. It feels awful to speak truth and receive an uncaring response. The deeper feeling is one of gut-wrenching loneliness. It is deeply lonely to share something that is important to us and receive an uncaring response from someone important to us.

So, not only are we often afraid of dealing with another's anger, but we may be even more afraid of the lonely feeling of being retaliated for. Until we are willing to know the truth of whether or not the other person really does care about what is important to us, we may avoid speaking our truth.

There are times when speaking right is unloving. Whenever truth is discovered, there is trouble. The whole of society is ready to give you all kinds of lies. But truth is an individual search. For Truth, first you got to make an immense effort to find it. Second when you find it, you suddenly also fight that the whole of society is against you- The whole world against you. If you want to live according your own truth, you have to face a whole world: your job may be lost, your friends, family may abandon you: suddenly you find yourself is in immense world, absolutely alone. You have to depend on this society in a thousand and one ways, and this society wants you to  live according to its lies. Finding the truth creates great turmoil in life. So it is true there is a trouble.

So are you willing to lose someone whom you have believed was your best friend, or are you going to avoid telling the truth to avoid knowing the truth? Are you willing to feel the loneliness if you find out that someone you thought cared really doesn't, or do you want to go on pretending that real caring exists with that person? and Most importantly Do you have the power to lose power?

Therefore, I learned a lesson that the only way have principles but not live by them is to avoid the Truth, to fool yourself into feeling that you’ve honored your principles when in reality you haven’t.  In order to do this you create excuses to shelter yourself from the facts, and thus avoid the fear of unknown that comes with facing it.
