A Nation Without an Anchor?
“The winds and the waves are always on the side of the ablest navigators.”– Edward Gibbon, British historian
Have you seen the movie The Perfect Storm? There is a scene that always triggers such a sense of loss and sorrow in me. Adrift, at sea, with no hope of rescue.
I think that is where our country is headed. Discussions and news conferences are about feelings and emotion. The issues are critical and reaching crisis level, whether it is the flood of illegal immigrants entering our nation or the destructive protests in Missouri, fanned by those who can only see skin color…and nothing beyond it.
What ever happened to supporting and defending the LAW?
There is an anchor for our souls if we will grab hold. It is sound and sure and will hold us safely, even in the roughest seas. The law is no respecter of persons and will mete out justice without prejudice. Once we cut ourselves loose from the anchor of the law, the storm can drive us willy-nilly to our own ruin. The law has been that foundational anchor. It has held us together when we might have fallen apart. It has stood the test of time and its truths will endure even if we refuse to adhere to them.
We need those who are looking for the purest, truest form of law recognition and enforcement. We have wandered way too far from the wellspring and its purity. The simplicity of the law has been sullied and trampled along the way. Let’s go back and examine once again the source of our republic and the hard-won liberty we have inherited.
It is too important to make these decisions a popularity poll and too dangerous to allow those who will not pay attention to the law call the shots.
The law is the law. Respect for the law should leave every law abiding citizen at ease, with nothing to fear. Those who intentionally break the law should understand that there are consequences. May we pledge to one another that we will not encourage the flouting of our laws, no matter who attempts it.
If we do not begin to get hold of the foundational parameters, we will be like the Perfect Storm, lost in a sea of lawlessness with no solid ground beneath us.
Hebrews 6:19, New International Version (NIV): “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”
