Many people have been understandably concerned about the health and safety of some food grown in Japan following the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
Many areas nearby are certainly contaminated with radiation, which also transfers to all of the surrounding areas crops and livestock.
This has obviously become a very serious problem for people in the region who depend on locally grown food for survival.
Luckily, food producers in Japan have been coming up with creative solutions to ensure that their food is as healthy and fresh as possible.
One solution can be found in Sanriku Fukko National Park where the world’s largest indoor farm now operates. The indoor farm was recently transformed from a 25,000-square-foot factory where semiconductors were once built.
In addition to being resistant to radiation, the indoor farm has a number of other important benefits. It actually uses 100 times less water than a traditional outdoor farming does. Also, due to the controlled temperature, environment and lighting, the farm is able to produce more food, with more nutrients, than is even possible in traditional outdoor farms.
The farm is said to produce 10,000 heads of lettuce each day.
There have been a number indoor farms to open throughout Japan in recent years, so it fitting that the world’s largest would be located in Japan.
