God in The Declaration of Independence 

The Declaration of Independence makes five references to God. But it is the very last sentence of the declaration which makes the final reference to God that I want to focus on. Here is the final verse.

“And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.”

The 56 founding fathers that attached their signatures to the Declaration of Independence, which cut the ties from Britain and established a new country did so with a, “firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence”. They knew that America was upheld and protected by the hand of God. America’s independence from Britain could only come about by our dependence on our Lord. It was no longer a king of a country that we served, but the king of kings, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior that we served.

Now look at the second half of the last sentence from the Declaration of Independence. It is describing Christianity and our fellowship with our fellow man.

“…we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor”

We mutually pledge to each other our lives! Jesus said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13)

We mutually pledge to each other fortunes. The Apostle Paul said, “Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth” (1 Corinthians 10:24)

We mutually pledge to each other honor! 1 Peter 2:17 the Apostle Peter says to, “Honour all men”.

The Declaration of Independence makes clear our “firm reliance” on and our “protection” that comes from only God himself. We as Americans assure, agree and even guarantee that we will spare nothing, including our own lives for the safety, security and wellbeing of another. That, my friends is Christianity!

The Declaration of Independence was more than just severing ties from Britain to form a new country. The Declaration of Independence was the supernatural progression of Christianity here on earth, ridding itself of an oppressive government and religion.
