HAVE THE LUNATICS TAKEN OVER THE ASYLUM?
In 1919 silent film actor Charlie Chaplin and others sought to protect their work and control their careers by forming United Artists. Richard A. Rowland, then head of Metro Studios, originated a phrase that, ever since, is used to reference situations in which people least capable of running an organization are left in charge, generating total chaos. Rowland coined the comment, “The lunatics have taken over the asylum.”
The phrase seems most appropriate today to a Congress unable to work with the president to protect our national security interests.
It is incredible Congress lacks such focus at a time we face multiple threats, including a nuclear attack by a madman in Pyongyang and, having now put Iran on notice we will no longer play softball with them, Tehran’s aggressive mullahs – determined to trigger the return of a child imam, who disappeared centuries ago, to initiate Islam’s world domination.
We are not dealing with rational actors in North Korea and Iran. As such, Congress should be making it clear to them, as far as our national security interests go, it fully supports President Donald Trump.
Yet, congressional members are undermining the president’s authority, trying to paint him as a loose cannon while sparing North Korea’s Kim Jong-un and Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei from similar charges.
Tragically, the greatest threat to our national security today lies not outside our borders but inside as Congress naively chooses to play party politics, ignoring ever-increasingly more dangerous national security threats.
Among those seeking to undermine Trump is House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Citing a 1946 law authorizing the president to undertake a first use of nuclear weapons if justified to counter a national security threat, she wants to limit his authorization by requiring it be a bipartisan decision.
While rightfully claiming it was a much different world back in 1946, Pelosi ignores the fact it is a much more dangerous one we live in today. And, based on the nature of the threats we now face, our president must have, and our enemies must know he has, maximum flexibility to initiate a nuclear attack when our national security is at stake.
Interestingly, the best reason against Pelosi’s proposal is provided by Congress itself, evidenced by its inability today to work together to effect major decisions.
Meanwhile, Democrats are giving further encouragement to our enemies. In June, 196 of them in Congress filed a lawsuit against Trump in an effort to forcibly remove him from office. Such a commitment by the minority party is not an effort to initiate impeachment – but an effort to initiate a coup by accusing Trump of violating the Constitution in profiting from business dealings with foreign governments.
Also targeting Trump personally are the likes of Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters and Frederica Wilson. The former has been calling for Trump’s impeachment even since before he was sworn in – without offering a shred of concrete evidence in support of it.
At an Oct. 13 event, Waters felt she had the right audience to express her desire “to take Trump out.” That statement should draw the attention of the Secret Service as an irresponsible congresswoman acts irresponsibly by making an irresponsible threat.
Eleven days later, a young protester who had blended in with the press while Trump was departing Capitol Hill threw Russian flags at him and shouted “traitor.” While the weapons of assault he selected were flags, it is clear the irresponsible words Waters selected earlier, playing to a partisan crowd, had been taken by one nut case as a call to action.
Not to be outdone by Waters, Wilson voluntarily contributed to the anti-Trump hysteria after listening in on what was meant to be a private phone call between the widow of a Green Beret killed in Niger and a Trump courtesy condolence call.
The widow was given 24-hour advanced notice Trump would call, so Wilson arranged to be present for it. Clearly, her only motivation for doing so was to identify an anti-Trump target of opportunity message during the call upon which to pounce.
While a dispute exists over whether Trump said exactly what Wilson says he said, let us assume for the sake of argument and to better understand Wilson’s logic, what she claims was said is correct.
Wilson claims Trump was insensitive, suggesting during the call the husband knew what he was getting into when he joined the military.
Two points Wilson conveniently overlooked in achieving her self-avowed status as a rock star for taking on Trump are:
It is absolutely fair to suggest one choosing a profession involving arms well understands what he or she is getting into.
In 2015, a speaker made a similar analogy concerning the deaths of FBI agents: “Most men and women in law enforcement leave their homes knowing there is a possibility they may not return. … It’s a way of saying they know the dangers, but they accept them. …” The speaker was Wilson – and it represents the height of hypocrisy for her to choose the above words in her speech but criticize Trump for using similar words in his call to the widow.
Irresponsibly assisting Pelosi and company in portraying Trump negatively to world leaders is our mainstream media. Even former Democratic President Jimmy Carter acknowledges the press has been harder on Trump than on any other president. In one unconscionable portrayal, the New York Times compares the rise of Trump to that of Hitler.
There may be an explanation as to why the lunatics have taken over the hallowed halls of Congress. We learned recently from a Washington, D.C., pharmacist who fills all prescriptions for members of Congress, he has been providing Alzheimer’s drugs for several. Perhaps they are off their meds!
Were that the cause, however, the cure would be simple. But, sadly, the cause is one of self-serving. It appears party politics are blinding members of Congress from recognizing their top priority: to protect our national security interests at all costs.
