Lilley was right in identifying Harper as the strongest defender of Israel among Western leaders. Ignoring all brickbats that Canada has abandoned its role as an honest broker in the Middle East, Harper continues to take a stand stand on Israel. Those stands have been made on the public record, including 2010, while addressing an anti-Semitism conference in Ottawa, when Harper launched into a take-no-prisoners defence of Israel, saying that no matter what the political cost, he would take a stand against those who would single out the Jewish state for condemnation. Harper’s strong stand for the protection of Israel was revealed again recently, when Canada was among only a handful of countries voting against the Palestinian bid for observer state status at the U.N. And Harper was noticeably alone in the world community on Canada’s reluctance to publicly condemn Israel’s announcement to build housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, in spite of it being at odds with Canada’s position on settlements in the occupied territories. In his rockets-coming-through-the-roof address today, Obama bragged about solving arguments with Canada “diplomatically”. “I mean, you know, the United States and Canada has arguments once in awhile, but they’re not the nature of arguments that can’t be solved diplomatically,” he said.
