"I don't know how to save the world. I don't have the answers or The Answer. I hold no secret knowledge as to how to fix the mistakes of generations past and present. The Amoral Nation

The Amoral Nation

Ronald Reagan once said that if we were ever to stop being a nation under God that we would be a nation gone under. Although it has not been a long time since he uttered these words, they seem prophetic today. We live today in a society that is driven by lust, harnessed by political correctness and given to excusing all kinds of excesses in behavior without rhyme or reason.

It would be a simple answer to blame all of our problems today on a state of immorality and the absence of character and control within our social norms. Recent discussion around the gender bending and social restructuring have taken over the agenda and court rulings have created a new protected class too important to even face the possibility of being questioned. Besides, who are we to judge what they could or could not do.

We have reached a point where character no longer determines what and who is acceptable to us. The days of leadership standards are waning and soon we will see nothing but beauty contests and popularity polls to determine who our leaders will be and what direction we will go and what actions we will take.

But this is not so much about the “bad people” or those whose behavior falls outside of the legal boundaries but instead it is about those who would claim to be good, to practice good deeds and exemplify good character in general. What can be done about one who claims to be the “good guy” but believes that others can do as they please whether or not it is of good character?

These are the people that will truly shape the way we as a nation move forward. Is it possible to allow others to behave in ways that are against the greater good and still maintain the same? Can we still define the greater good in ways that make sense to everyone about everything?

To a moralist, there is but one way to act, one way to behave and anything outside of this is unacceptable. As such, within society, there are fixed boundaries, limits and proscriptions that define and shape the members of the social order, and without these, order ceases to function. Morals are more than just a set of laws; they are principles that are ingrained into the collective spirit that govern society. They define the unwritten law that in turn allows governments to serve and protect its citizens.

Over the past twenty years, the pace of moral decay in this country has accelerated at an alarming pace. This pace has been driven by an absence of moral certainty and is being driven from the side of good. Good works have become disguised as government projects with glorified names and lofty speechmaking and awards. Very little is done truly in the name of charity, the mere giving for the sake of the gift, without acclaim or reward for the giver. In fact, the whole business has been turned on its head with the notion of “giving back.” Even the church has been caught in this trap, sometimes alluding to the concept of giving back to God. Giving in any way other than freely is not an act of charity, but one of paying off a debt, whether it is real or imagined, a settling of the score or just a way to relieve one of doing truly good works.

Thus we are left to ponder what can be done to return this nation to a moral base. With both sides believing that they are pursuing what is “right,” is there a way to definitely define character in solely a moral definition? And what exactly will be the role of the established church in identifying and maintaining the moral status quo? These two questions will define the discussion and develop the solution.

In an immoral nation, there is a battle between the teachings of Jesus and the works of Satan. In an amoral nation, this becomes a struggle between God and nothing. An immoral person knows the difference between good and evil and chooses to follow the evil path. An amoral person does not differentiate between the two. Theirs is a life of personal satisfaction, a journey to a place unknown. They become followers of hedonism, seeking only to satisfy their own personal desires, wants, and wishes. There are no boundaries, no limits that they will adhere to in the governance of their behaviors. Worst still, they have little regard for the behaviors of others, allowing all kinds of excesses to be excused as “normal” behavior.

There is a struggle within the church to find a compromise with this attitude. The examples are endless as the teachings of the Good Book are laid aside in favor of becoming more inclusive in an ever-changing society. The mere idea that the church would cater to this collection of social misfits and degenerates is so far removed from the true word that those who follow these practices can not be seen as within the true Light of sanctification. Theirs is a walk of the path of good intentions, leading only to the wide gate and away from the narrow path. They cannot be in good conscientious be considered true followers.

The church has struggled to stay on point from its inception. The early churches strayed enough that the writer of Revelation chastised many of them and found few who still held true to the teachings. And this has continued. Schisms and heresy have dominated the history of the church leading to the collection of faiths and practices that we have today, each claiming to be the one true path to salvation. The church continues to devolve and it is only a matter of time until there is no true home for the believer. All because of a belief that the church is meant for everyone.

To have a moral base, one must understand that there will be those who stray. Since the beginning of time, man has failed and fallen short of perfection. This is our story. In the modern world of attendance trophies, no grade classes, and subjective reasoning, it is little wonder that amorality is a growing force. Rather than judge on absolutes, it has become fashionable to see everything as inclusive. No behaviors can be seen in a light of right and wrong, instead, they are excused by reason of birth or circumstance. Accountability is unknown and the world flourishes without restraint and dignity. This is the ideal world for the amoralist to thrive.

In the days of the fire and brimstone church, preachers would rail against the works of Satan and the people would be chastised for these practices. It was unacceptable to be in the church and be a practitioner of evil. Today the teaching is to hate the sin and love the sinner. How exactly does that work? Do we invite the robber into our home so that they will know exactly what they will find when they rob us? Do we leave our car unlocked in a dark alley and put a sign on it so that it can be stolen? How many more examples do we need to understand that it is impossible to separate one from the other? As Jesus was on the cross, one of the thieves repented and the other did not. The one who repented was saved and is now in heaven, the other damned forever. Such is the way of the Lord.

The amoral person sees no reason for repentance, no reason to change a lifestyle of hedonism and self. What little good that they contribute to society is seen in a light to personal glory and its sole purpose is to bring recognition to the greater self and cast them in a favorable way. To welcome them into the church and spend time and energy on them is a waste of valuable resources. They will do little to enhance the faith; instead, their presence will diminish it and water it down to nothing but the lukewarm church of Revelation. And the message was very clear on this church; it was seen as worse than those who followed false teachings. It was in fact the worst kind of church practice that there was. We need to steer clear of anything that brings closer to this.

Without God, there is no morality. Those who deny this are reprobates, outcasts from the grace of the Father. Theirs is a world that will degenerate into desperation and despair, a place without life or love. They have no place within the Kingdom and they will be damned for all eternity. It is not easy to accept but it is by their own choice that this is to be. Our mission is no to go out and save them; they can only save themselves. And to do this, they, not us, must change. It is our duty to be faithful to the teachings and to practice our faith strongly and without reservation. We cannot allow those whose way will diminish the church to be seen as a part of the faith.

To battle the amoral man, we must be ready to stand firm in our teachings, to call out those who would condemn the church for being what God has called to be — the true center of our lives. All that we do must be for the glory of God, all our work, all our words, all our actions, must be seen in His Light. And anything that takes away from this is to be avoided and condemned. Period. Jesus had little use for the unrepentant sinner and so should we. Our task is to guard the narrow gate and welcome those who walk through. Doing this will leave us no time to tarry on the wide road.
