Killings for Islam

Islam and Christianity have an interesting contrast. Jesus never killed anyone, and Christianity took 300 years before the killing began.

Whereas Islam began with killing of unbelievers right from the start.

For the first century of its existence, Islam was absolutely soaked in blood. The killing only slowed down as the Islamic empire finally ran into boundaries in the 8th century, after about a century of expansionist, imperialist, unprovoked Islamic aggression.

Even after the initial expansion slowed, the killings did not end. Slaughter (jihad) and oppression (sharia) are part of the core doctrines of Islam. Killing for Islam is not a modern idea, and it will never end until some sort of reformation takes place within the religion. Medieval Christianity was equally violent, but Christianity has since reformed.

For many years now, Islam has been the most violent religion in the world.

Did Islam cause the Dark Ages?

Did Islam, not barbarians, destroy classical civilization?

• Henri Pirenne and others have promoted the theory that 7th century Islam, not 5th century barbarian conquest, was the main force thatdestroyed classical civilization. The theory is that the "barbarians" preserved much of classical civilization in culture, if not in politics. But then in the 7th century Islam destroyed that culture in North Africa and the Middle East. And even the areas it did not actually conquer, in Europe, were cut off from what had been for centuries a vast area of free trade and civilization around the Mediterranean. These now-isolated non-Muslim areas became backwaters, without access to the trade and products they had long relied on, and they went into decline.
• Mohammed and Charlemagne Revisited by Emmet Scott (2012) is an update of this theory.
• Gates of Vienna review points out that Islam was so insignificant in the 18th-19th centuries that no one could imagine it as the main cause rather than the barbarians. "during the European ascendancy, it was difficult to comprehend how much damage could be inflicted by such a primitive and barbaric culture. By the time the European colossus stood astride the globe in the nineteenth century, Islam was a trivial retrograde rabble that deserved no respect and even less attention. How could it have come within a hair’s breadth of smothering European civilization in its cradle?"

Islamic Spain

• Islamic Spain has a (not entirely false, but perhaps exaggerated) reputation as a place of tolerance.
• It is true that it was often better than medieval Christian Europe, but that's not saying much. It was hardly a tolerant place by modern standards.

  • "This was tolerance and no more than that. ... but it is a lot better than intolerance as such, and the limited but substantial tolerance accorded to Jews and other non-Muslim communities in the Muslim states until early modern times was certainly vastly better than anything that was available in Christendom."
• Maria Rosa Menocal has been prominent in promoting the idea that Muslim Spain was tolerant, but even she says that Jews and Christians had limited rights in Muslim Spain: "The dhimmi, as these covenanted peoples were called, were granted religious freedom, not forced to convert to Islam. They could continue to be Jews and Christians, and, as it turned out, they could share in much of Muslim social and economic life. In return for this freedom of religious conscience the Peoples of the Book (pagans had no such privilege) were required to pay a special tax - no Muslims paid taxes - and to observe a number of restrictive regulations: Christians and Jews were prohibited from attempting to proselytize Muslims, from building new places of worship, from displaying crosses or ringing bells. In sum, they were forbidden most public displays of their religious rituals."
• Robert Spencer points out that anyone who criticised Muhammed and Islam in Muslim Spain would be put to death. And many such executions are recorded.
• Hugh Fitzgerald says the myth of tolerant Muslim Spain serves a deep need: "Yet even these romanticizers who write of Al-Andaluz as the great exemplar of tolerance also consider it to be, at best, a unique example in the long 1400-year history of Islam -- which already is a way of admitting that the treatment of non-Muslims under Islam in general was not a paradise of "tolerance" and fruitful mutual accommodation. In all of the history of Islam, the story of Muslim Spain is that only one where there is even a colorable claim for "tolerance." How pleasant it would be to make of history what it was not. How wonderful to think that at least once, just once, in the whole long history of Muslim conquest, there really was one spot where there was real tolerance".
• The Reconquista - The Islamic conquest of Spain is reversed.
• Expulsion of the Muslims and Jews from Spain, 1492. The new Christian state had less, not more, religious freedom than the old, Islamic one.
• The Spanish Inquisition illustrates the brutal nature of Christianity at this time. Christianity has changed radically since then. Islam needs to change too.

Fatih Sultan Muhammad (1983), an Islamic-viewpoint animation that celebrates the Fall of Constantinople to Islam in 1453.
Oddly, it leaves out the raping of women and children by the invading army.
The jihadist army endlessly invokes Allah's blessing and shouts "Allah Akbar". It is openly portrayed as a great religious war against the infidel.

Turkey was only 10 percent Muslim at the Fall of Constantinople in 1453.
Now Turkey is 100 percent Muslim. The Christian and Greek civilization of Anatolia is gone. It is annihilated.

• ISIS, Oct 2014, says that the brutal enslaving of innocent Yazidi women and children is just normal Islamic law. They say that since the Yazidi religion pre-dates Islam, its women and children can be lawfully enslaved: "Accordingly, the Islamic State dealt with this group as the majority of fuqaha [scholars] have indicated ... Unlike the Jews and Christians, there was no room for the jizyah payment. Also, their women could be enslaved unlike female apostates who the majority of fuqaha say cannot be enslaved and can only be given an ultimatum to repent or face the sword. ... This large-scale enslavement of mushrik [polytheist] families is probably the first since the abandonment of this Sharia’ah law. ... one should remember that enslaving the families of the kuffar and taking their women as concubines is a firmly established aspect of the Shari’ah".

Dawkins corrected this in later editions.
But the point stands that the Photoshop tells a profound truth - no other religion has a problem with violence like Islam does.
