Shrugging Off “White Guilt”

The RAR (Radical Agitation Racketeers) in conjunction with the Progressives in government at all levels, including local school districts, have been promoting the idea of “White Guilt”.  To be honest, I’m not too clear on what they think that they will accomplish beyond increasing the incomes of psychoanalysts in the Berkeley-San Francisco area and giving some sort of justification for black mob violence.



But the real question that we need to ask is “Exactly what are we supposed to feel guilty about?”  Apparently we’re supposed to become paralyzed with guilt over the utterly indefensible treatment of minorities (which is admittedly true), primarily “persons of color” in modern Progressive parlance, which occurred until recently.

“Recently”, again according to these Progressive academic theorists, apparently means anything that occurred at the instigation of anyone in the past, oh about, one thousand years. And we are supposed to feel guilty over these acts because, well, we share a racial characteristic with the perpetrators.

The first criticism that I would make about this “theory” is that it flies in the face of every other Progressive nostrum that has permeated American culture since the Progressives began amassing political and academic power around the turn of the last century. 

Every other social ill that Progressives agitate against can generally be described as “You can’t tar every member of a social group with the actions of a single member (or sub-set of members) of that group.”  In other words, you can’t blame all Italians for the actions of the Mafia or Cosa Nostra.  You can also not blame all blacks if some are criminals.  No one could possibly refute either of those propositions.

Yet, all whites, particularly white males, are blamed for the fact that the KKK existed, was violent and murdered large numbers of black Americans.  All whites are being blamed for the fact that the slavery of black Americans existed.  Unlike some radical Muslims who have denied the existence of the Holocaust, no one denies the fact that slavery existed in America, nor that the KKK perpetrated some horrific acts of violence.

But since slavery, as an institution, ceased 150 years ago, I find it doubtful that anyone alive today participated by owning slaves or by being enslaved themselves. I am at a loss as to why anyone should be expected to feel guilt that such a thing existed more than a century before they were even born. Yet Progressives and the RAR are completely comfortable spreading the idea the members of the largest plurality of Americans, which would be whites, are guilty of every sort of abuse, bias, intolerance and unfairness (the list of misbehaviors is endless and is being constantly augmented).

But black Americans are not the only beneficiaries of the protective, and often pre-emptive, accusations hurled at all white Americans.  Hispanics are quick to grab a ride on the “victim of white privilege” gravy train as are many women of all races, anyone in the LGBT community and anyone else that the left can persuade that they somehow received a raw deal by anyone white at any time in history.

If it wasn’t so blatantly self-serving, one could almost be amused by such posturing. The endless accusations that all or today’s ills are the fault of white American males, or in the more enlightened version, all European white males, or white males who were unduly influenced by Western civilization, are intellectually insulting.

Athens, Greece was the place that originally planted the seeds of what we know as democracy.  Athens also had a huge number of slaves.  Does this mean that democracy as a political system has no validity because it was initiated in a place where the ownership of slaves was practiced?

Can anyone in academia why anyone should consider the treatment of blacks at the hands of Bull Connor was immeasurably worse than the treatment of white male Americans at the hands of the Japanese on the Bataan Death March?  Oh, that’s right.  I forgot. Those men were white, so they deserved whatever happened to them, right?

Can the most ardent supporter of preferential treatment for blacks claim that today’s Progressives are the heirs to the enlightened policies of Woodrow Wilson ignore the fact that it was Wilson himself who segregated the races in the military?

Can anyone familiar with the history of abortion in this country claim that abortion and birth control began solely because Margaret Sanger wanted to provide women a choice?  Or will they recognize the inescapable fact that Margaret Sanger, a white woman, thought that eugenics was a really clever way to eliminate the black population in the United States.  Could that be a reason why so many abortion clinics are still being located in primarily black communities?  Minority versus minority planned genocide?  Could that be possible?

Does anyone believe that the Hutus and Tutsis in Rwanda weren’t hell bent on trying to utterly eliminate each other, but were instead sitting around as a group singing Kumbaya?  How about the centuries old violence between Hindus and Muslims on the Indian subcontinent?

And as for those who have immigrated to this country from any country south of the Rio Grande, are they free of any history of such uncivilized behavior?  Let’s look at who this group of Hispanics, or Latinos if you prefer, are descended from.  Should they be suffering Latino Guilt?

Every person in what is now central or South America is descended from either a pre-Columbian empire such as the Inca, Aztec or Mayan nations, or smaller native tribes or they might be descendants of the Spanish Conquistadores.  Or they might have a family tree that mixes both groups.

The Aztecs, most assuredly, committed heinous acts of barbarism against those who were not Aztecs.  Generally speaking, human sacrifice, followed by cannibalism is the kind of behavior that is frowned upon, to say the least.  At a minimum, that behavior will upset a lot of Progressive vegetarians.  And most other pre-Columbian tribes were of the same mind when it came to dealing with defeated enemies.

As for those of more directly Spanish descent, well, the Spanish need only one word spoken to demonstrate the blood on their hands – the Inquisition.  The behavior of the original conquistadores wasn’t exactly remarkable because of its gentleness.  Winning hearts and minds was not at the top of their list of agenda items.  So should they be burdened by Spanish guilt?

And let’s not forget the efforts of the Third Reich to make sure they weren’t left out of the select group of those who should feel guilty about the past behavior of their parents, grandparents or even total strangers with who they share a common location and language.  They must, without option, bear German guilt, right?

And last, but certainly not least, let’s look at Native Americans.  Does anyone have any evidence that Bull Connor or the KKK ever scalped anyone?  So who deserves to feel more guilty?

No nation, no culture, no people on this planet can be said to be guilt free according to the RAR and the Progressives according to their definition of deserved guilt.  The history of human behavior over millennia shows that no race, nationality or culture is free from blood on their hands.

That being said, I can only address the next comment directly to those RAR and Progressive promoters of assigning guilt to people who have personally never committed the acts that they are supposed to feel guilty about:

Get over it!  And while you’re at it, get over yourselves.  You have neither the legal right nor moral standing to demand guilty groveling from anyone.  I’ve shrugged off the white guilt that you would like me to bear like a cross, and there is no way I will agree to pick up that burden just to make you feel good about yourselves.
