The Silence of the Sheep

Crowd psychology is a branch of social psychology relating to behavior, and processes turning individuals into an entity called the crowd. Psychological warfare aiming to destroy the target audience´s morale, value and belief system is also keen on bombarding ´´the mob´´ with eradicative propaganda. Mao Zedong and Joseph Stalin were fascinated by mass psychology, and attempted to impose Freudian ´´horde leadership´´.

The history of mankind teaches that autocrats tend to ´´herd sheep´´ rather than humbly serve people, but also proves that many wolves in sheep´s clothing ended trampled in a stampede of the angry ´´followers´´.

Austin O´Malley, one of the leaders of the 1798 Irish rebellion observed: ´´The statesman shears the sheep; the politician skins them´´. If we agree with O´Malley´s analysis, it looks like over the last decade we have seen too many politicians and we have shortage of statesmen.

In 1841, Scottish writer Charles Mackay published Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds; nowadays the chronicle of socio-political events could have for a title Extraordinary Political Delusions and the Madness of Political Correctness.

Blacklisted Sheep
Black sheep has for commandment Benjamin Franklin´s ´´It´s the first responsibility of every citizen to question authority´´ and for this reason is likely to become blacklisted.

The unmanageable creature won´t bleat: Baa-rack! after an executive order, or Meh-rkel! after the flood of refugees; love it or hate it, it will ruminate and stand its ground, stubborn like Counter-RAM.

Fat Wethers

Confucius noted that ´´To be wealthy and honored in unjust society is a disgrace´´ but spiritual and intellectual wethers grazing the greenest grass would certainly disagree, and go for Orwell´s quote instead ´´All Animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others´´.  Subservient and acquisitive, these social species feel the smartest in the flock but their masters often pull the wool over their eyes in order to pass the buck.

Albert Einstein rightly stated: ´´In order to be an immaculate member of a flock of sheep, one must above all be a sheep oneself´´.

Sheepish Slacktivism

Slactivistic species, seen by wolves as the ´´useful sheep´´ will support a social cause, they have no clue about, in order to feel satisfied that they have contributed. Slactivists are active when minimum of knowledge and no personal effort is required; otherwise they turn into passive pacifists. Sadly, as noted by Yves Montand: ´´Pacifists are like sheep who believe that wolves are vegetarians´´.

No matter how preposterous, the idea of ´´herding´´ humans seems irresistible to wannabe ´´shepherds´´ because propaganda feeds their own delusions and offers a mirage of an absolute conformity of the flock. Shaved by taxes, dumbed down and behaviorally programmed into the silence of the sheep, the ´´livestock´´ would applaud the leader even if he opened the barn door for a pack of wolves. Will it ever happen? A black sheep will answer: I don´t know. Ask Ceausescu.
