How's that God-free zone working out, America?

How's that God-free zone working out, America?

You can’t replace something with nothing. As John Adams noted):

“Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

The tragedies are becoming so numerous that we refer to them now simply by city. Last night, Dallas joined the ranks. The causes are many, yet the flip side of the coin is always the same. “My name is Legion, for we are many.”

Our Declaration of Independence severed our ties with Great Britain, not God. In that declaration we appealed to “the Laws of Nature, and Nature’s God.” Today our citizens, our government, our media, entertainers and institutions all lie about the one and deny the other. What did you expect would happen, America? You can’t replace something with nothing.

The only God who exists deals with nations much as he deals with individuals. Religious branding is a poor substitute for identifying who in the spiritual realm owns whom and what in the natural realm. Jesus said we would be able to identify who we and others belong to by the fruit we bear. We are not the free agents we imagine ourselves to be.

It doesn’t matter what the letter to the Danbury Baptists says, separation of church and state appears nowhere in the Constitution. The Constitution plainly says that the federal government can’t establish a national religion. Yet today the federal government is in the process of establishing one of the most failed religions in the world as our national religion. What fruit does it bear?

In 2008 America elected a community organizer as president. I explained then that community organizers divide people into opposing groups and then extort money from whoever has it. Now America is almost Chicago, where only the corrupt and connected prosper, if anyone can call driving over the previous night’s dead bodies on the way to work prosperity. The only people in America who still had any money were future generations, so the newly elected community organizer extorted money from them in the forms of debts never to be repaid.

Yeah, great, sure; everybody agrees its broken – so what do we do to fix it? Each side has its agenda, but the sad fact is, we won’t fix it. We won’t because we can’t. It’s not humanly fixable. It’s a matter of the heart. Only God can fix it, and there is only one God. But as with individuals, He’s not going to fix it until we ask.

God is not causing America’s – or indeed the world’s problems – but He is permitting them. He created individuals with free will, and He doesn’t often violate that. Nations are nothing more than collections of individuals expressing a national free will. God doesn’t often violate that, either. So we have to ask, collectively, for help as a nation.

Most of the men and women in Washington, D.C., are too proud to ask. The opposing groups inflamed by the community organizer each believe they have the solution, which involves taking something from someone else, raking off their own share, and passing the rest around. When Legion speaks, they listen. He owns the bulk of them. But who elected them?

If God has a purpose, He will not be frustrated by individuals, by judges, by legislatures, by presidents, by other religions, by atheism, by secular humanism, or indeed by anything in the world or outside of the world. Nothing in the natural realm, and nothing in the spiritual realm.

If your God is frustrated by these things, then he’s not God; he’s a creation of your mind or hands. God transcends everything. He invites each of us to partner with Him in his plan for fixing the world. Not our plan. His plan.

If America would like to help, America needs to ask. If we’d like to spare the next city its coming heartbreak, we need to ask someone who has the power to change the human heart, because that’s the problem.

Maybe I should ask. Maybe you should ask. Maybe Christians should ask together this Sunday, when they go to church. If Christians don’t ask, then who will?

God is calling America back into his arms, both because He birthed her and because she is central to his plan for the world’s redemption. He will move heaven and earth to fix our problems, because he can. But God is not going to violate America’s free will, any more than yours or mine.
