29 Warships Changing The Future
The following Navy ships are all responsible for changing the way wars can be fought and won at sea.
USS Coronado
The USS Coronado is an Independent class warships built for the US Navy. Designed specifically for coastal combat the ship undertakes surface, anti-submarine and mine warfare.
USS Zumwalt
The USS Zumwalt was constructed specifically for stealth. When the USS Zumwalt is captured on radar it appears to be a fishing boat, which is no mean feat as the ship 600-foot-long and 14,500 tons in weight.
HMS Defender
The HMS Defender is the fifth of its specification to be built for the British Royal Navy and designed specifically for anti-air warfare, as it has the capability to target numerous targets even when these targets are travelling at supersonic speeds.
USS Independence (LCS 2)
The USS Independence (LCS-2) is the head ship in the class known as the Independence, this being the sixth named Independence. The Independence was first commissioned in 2009 and is a high speed and multifunctional.
The Juliet Marine Ghost
The Juliet Marine Ghost belongs to the U.S. Navy, it can achieve 900 times less hull friction than a conventional warship, or in other words it can basically move on water undetected.
TCG Heybeliada
The TCG Heybeliada is part of the Turkish Navy and began service in 2015. The excellent stealth features offered by the TCG Heybeliada have seen it offered referred to as the “Sea Ghost” and it is used for anti-submarine warfare and patrol duties.
USS Enterprise (CVN-80)
The USS Enterprise is the ninth US vessel to bear the name Enterprise and the construction is due to begin in 2018 with a view to joining the lead ship USS Gerald Ford and the sister-ship USS John F. Kennedy.
Steregushchy (hull number 530)
The Steregushchy has been constructed specifically to take over from the Grisha class, and will be used predominately for zone operations, enemy submarine engagement and gun support for and based operations.
HMS Queen Elizabeth
The HMS Queen Elizabeth is the biggest warship ever owned by the British Royal Navy. With the capability to carry 40 aircraft, the Queen Elizabeth was designed purely for its quick attack
Admiral Gorshkov
The Indian Navy has confirmed that the Admiral Gorshkov, the ex-Soviet carrier is undergoing a full refit to bring it up to date in terms of the competitor’s aircraft carriers.
USNS Spearhead
The USNS Spearhead has been used for the US Navy for the past 4 years and has the capacity to hold a 41-man crew. The ship was designed specifically for non-warfare operations and combat style missions.
USS Gerald R Ford
Named after President Ford, the USS Gerald R Ford is one of the US Naval supercarriers and can hold over seventy aircrafts. The ship is armed with the Rolling Airframe Missile system as well as the Sea Sparrow Missile system.
The USS America
Launched in 2012, the USS America is an amphibious assault ship with no deck, as this part of the ship opens and allows smaller ships to be stowed away inside. There is a much larger deck that can hold helicopters with storage capacity for extra fuel and an on-board hospital.
USS Anchorage
The USS Anchorage is an amphibious transport ship used by the United States Navy. The ship has the ability to carry a landing craft or two hovercrafts on-board. In addition to this it can also carry four helicopters, and has two rolling airframe missile launchers.
Russian Corvette Boiky
The Russian Corvette Boiky is a small warship that has been in service in the Russian Navy since 2013. The Boiky has the capacity to hold two torpedo tubes and a helipad where the KA-27 can land. It is very light in comparison to other ships making it ideal for coastal support.
Dixmude
The Dixmude is one of the French Naval ships used for amphibious assaults and also to carry a helicopter. The flight deck has the capability to carry 16 heavy or 35 lightweight helicopters and internally the ship can hold two barges, a tank and approximately 70b other vehicles.
French Frigate Forbin
The French Frigate Forbin is a large ship that the French Navy use to protect other vessels from submarine attack. The Forbin is able to protect air carriers and civilian ships from submarine attacks. The ship is designed to appear far smaller if picked up on radar and its own radar system allows it to detect small objects that are travelling a rapid speed.
INS Makar
The INS Makar is used by the Indian Navy in the form of a catamaran. The ship has been designed to provide accurate charts for the Navy, and whilst its main job is to chart the coast it can be used to provide coastal defense and take part in rescue operations.
CNS Kunming
The CNS Kunming is a destroyer ship that is operated by the Chinese Liberation Army. The ship has the capability to carry a helicopter and various weapons, including vertical air to surface missile launchers and torpedo tubes.
CNS Linyi
Used by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army the CNS Linyi is one of 24 ships used as a multi-purpose warship. It has the capability to carry two helicopters and also has an on-board hanger for storing other aircraft. Complete with a radar warning system and missile jamming system as well as decoy missiles and anti-submarine missiles.
HMAS Canberra
Predominately a helicopter landing dock for the Royal Australian Navy the HMAS Canberra has the capability to hold either 18 helicopters or 100+ vehicles, including four landing crafts to transport the troopers and their cargo to the shore where necessary.
HMS Agamemnon
The HMS Agamemnon is a nuclear powered submarine which is one of the six planned for the British Royal Navy. Due to the power source the submarine will be able to stay underwater for all the time that there is a food supply and the cargo holds approximately 3 months’ worth of food for the crew. This submarine is due to be launches in 2020.
INS Vishal
The INS Vishal is predicted to be finished in 2023 and will be a new aircraft for the Indian Navy to replace existing aircraft carriers. The INS Vishal will have the capacity to hold 1,400 members of crew and will be designed to remain at sea all of the time that there is a food supply available.
BNS Riachuelo
The BNS Riachuelo is a small submarine that is being constructed for the Brazilian Navy, and is said to be 75-foot-long and be able to travel at 21 knots. The submarine will have both diesel and electric motors and whilst underwater will use the electric power but will have to resurface to recharge the batteries.
TCG Heybeliada
The TCG Heybeliada has been in service since last year by the Turkish Navy and is part of the Ada-class. The ship has the capacity on deck to launch a helicopter and for aerial refuelling. The main uses for the TCG Heybeliada is anti-submarine and anti-aircraft warfare.
JDS Hyuga
The JDS Hyuga is a helicopter carrier used by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense force. The ship began service in 2009 and although it has a multitude of weapons that it can use to defend itself, it is mainly used for rescue operations.
SAS Mendi
The SAS Mendi is a ship that is used by the South African Navy. Weighing 3,700 tons it has the ability to travel at 30 knots. There are numerous radar systems on-board which include one that is capable of identifying other ships as friend or enemy. The ship is protected by the multiple machine guns, vertical missile launcher and decoy missile system.
HDMS Absalon
The HDMS Absalon is one of the largest ships that have ever served in the Royal Danish Navy. Having been in service since 2007 the HDMS Absalon has the ability to carry two helicopters and has an on-board hanger.
HMCS Chicoutimi
The HMCS Chicoutimi began its life with the British Royal Navy until it was sold in 1998 to the Royal Canadian Navy where it took on the guise of a hunter-killer submarine. Powered by a diesel engine it is equipped with six torpedo tubes and a bubble decoy system. The HMCS Chicoutimi is limited to missions in shallow water and mainly used to guard the shore line from attack.
